The Ask and The Answer

This is the second book in the Chaos Walking series. Even though its a YA book, it really does touch (in a very subtle way), the same type of societal nonsense we deal with now. As a recap, this series is about a new society on a new planet whose goal was to escape what goes here. The migration of this new society took years before this story takes place so the shock of coming to a new planet is over and the reader is following a first generation child, who has discovered the corrupt society he has grown up in. What makes it worse is that this new society was exposed to a germ that enables them to read one another's thoughts. With the exception of women..women can't be read, but they can read minds.

The other problem is that new settlers are coming from "Old World" (presumably us), when there are a plethora of problems already taking place on this New World. There is slavery, animal rights issues, gender discrimination, terrorists (who call themselves The Answer) and a corrupt government (who call themselves The Ask).

This was a good 500 page sequel that flew by. It leaves you hanging big time. You want to know what will become of the narrator and his love interest, Viola (who is one of the new settlers whose ship crashed when her people sent her ahead of them to scope out the new society).

Definitely not literary gold, but its fun. And if it gets younger people to read, why not?
