This starts out with the invisible man already invisible. And then later on you find out how he did it. This is the original..and you start off wondering where he ended up where he ended up.
I couldn't figure out why the invisible man (a scientist) was so angry, violent, and generally unlikeable. Invisibility seems like a good thing when you first think about it. But then you realize why it would really, really suck to be invisible when you see what he goes through. His anger and frustration made sense. He was still a tool prior to being invisible, but the invisibility made him deranged.
Why invisibility sucks:
1. It's not reversible. At least in this case it wasn't.
2. You may be see through, but you're not feel through. He was constantly dodging people in the street who didn't see him. It was exhausting. He got knocked around a lot. If you want to be invisible...don't be it in a busy, fast paced city.
3. Dogs and cats smell you and will attack or give you away.
4. If you get dirty, it shows. So if you get mud on your feet, everyone will know it. They'll see where you're going or where you've been. And you will freak everyone out when they see floating dirty feet walking down the street.
5. When you eat, its not invisible at first. So digest fast or you and everyone else will be grossed out.
6. You will not find a companion. No one wants to have sex with someone invisible.
7. In order to be invisible, you have to be naked. The clothes aren't invisible. So come the winter, you will be freezing unless you hide in the mall at night and sleep on one of the showcase beds.
8. When it rains or snows outside, the outline of your body appears. Any precipitation isn't good. This will also freak unsuspecting folk out.
9. You have to steal EVERYTHING.
10. If you dress up, you will have to look bandaged up like a burn victim. Your entire face will have to be covered. This does not bode well for social interaction.
So, if anyone asks you if you can have a superpower, don't say invisibility unless you knows its reversible. This HG Wells story was a very good, simple lesson on being careful what you wish for.
