Something Missing

How do I explain this? This is about a 35 year old man who goes into people's homes or what he calls "clients", for years (not just  a one time robbery) and meticulously steals things. He has OCD and his attention to detail has made him a successful creep. His "client's" have no idea that he enters their homes and steals their detergent, two tomatoes, that extra roll of tissue paper.  He steals over a long period of time and makes sure he steals from married couples, with no pets, who are at work more than they are at home. When he steals more expensive items he'll do it over a six month period (such as making sure jewelry that hasn't been worn in two months stays in the same spot in the jewelry box before he nabs it and puts it on ebay).

He cares for the people he steals from. It doesn't make sense, but he does. He doesn't want them to be hurt...he just wants to benefit from their unwanted or unnoticed stuff. The plot changes when he is put in situations where its up to him to help- and save- the people he previously stole from.

Very interesting, off beat novel. I thought the protagonist was beyond weird and, while I understand his OCD tendencies, it made me paranoid that there could be people like this out there. Can you imagine someone coming into your place for 9-10 years and you never notice? It could happen if the person was good enough. *shiver*
