The story centers around two extremely snotty characters who aim to convince you of their intellect the entire time. One of them is a suicidal 12 year old girl, so it makes sense that she feels she has something to prove since children, especially tweens, always try to remind you of how smart they are. But the main character Renee is 54 years old and goes on for chapters about Dutch art, her superior music tastes, her dislike of rich people (because she can't be part of their world), history, philosophy, grammar. These chapters where Renee states her superiority took away from the plot and were pointless after the first few chapters. I didn't like much about this book and I was surprised it was so highly rated.
On the surface, a story about a brilliant self taught concierge and a young rich tenant who plans to end her life because her family sucks should be interesting. But because of all the fluff and the snobby, pretentiousness of the two main characters, I just couldn't wait for this to end. And when they come to their respective realizations about why they need to change..it's too late for the audience because you dislike them so much. And a bad ending to boot.
Boooooooooooo
